My Golden Retriever Saved My Life
My Golden Retriever Saved My Life
Last year, my brave Golden Retriever not only saved my life but has also played a crucial role in helping my son, who has epilepsy. It all began on May 17, 2024, when I contracted an E. coli virus from contaminated water in South Africa. For three exhausting weeks, I battled severe illness at home, and throughout it all, my loyal Golden Retriever stayed by my side, never leaving me alone—even accompanying me to the bathroom. Her unwavering presence was a source of immense comfort during my darkest moments.
One early morning, my health took a turn for the worse as the E. coli made my blood toxic. The situation escalated into bacterial meningitis, and I could feel my body giving in. It was heartbreaking to witness how Daisy sensed my declining condition; she climbed onto me, desperate to offer comfort. She even went to fetch a blanket, gently placing it under my neck. It was as if she was trying to protect me from the illness that was overwhelming me.
When my husband came home that day, he could immediately tell something was terribly wrong. Daisy ran to him, barking urgently, and literally pulled him toward me as I lay on the floor, struggling to breathe. Without hesitation, he rushed me to the hospital, where the doctors swiftly took me to the ICU. After an incredibly painful lumbar puncture, it became tragically clear that the infection had taken over 85% of my brain, and I had to be placed on life support.
After several days in the ICU, my devoted Daisy began to cry at home, a sound that pierced my husband’s heart. He instinctively knew he needed to get to the hospital as something was terribly wrong. When he arrived, he found the doctors frantically trying to resuscitate me because my heart had stopped. In that frightening moment, I could almost feel her cries resonating within me, urging me to come back. Miraculously, I did come back, and after 10 long days, I was transferred to a regular ward, where I continued to fight for my recovery.
In those challenging days, my husband had the brilliant idea to video call me so I could speak to Daisy. He hoped that hearing my voice might help us both heal. Every night, after I spoke with my sons, I would chat with her, and just like that, we found strength in each other. As I slowly improved, so did she.
When I finally returned home after an arduous 11 weeks and 10 days, Daisy was overwhelmed with joy. She wouldn’t let anyone close to me, instinctively wanting to protect me from the world. She even pushed my sons away, refusing to allow anyone to come near. I felt so deeply grateful for her dedication and love. Daisy is my everything; she is the essence of my soul that returned to me. We truly are one.
While I was in the hospital, my son experienced an epileptic seizure, and Daisy sprang into action to protect him until my husband arrived. He has a Border Collie, who valiantly pressed the alarm for help, but Daisy refused to leave his side, standing over him as a guard. The ER staff were incredibly understanding, speaking to her with kindness as if she were a mother caring for her child. “Hello, Mommy, I’m here to help him; please let me help him.” Because of their gentle approach, they were able to assist my son in getting the oxygen he needed to breathe. Daisy, ever watchful, sensed my absence and instinctively knew she had to look after him. Even now, every time he has a seizure, she takes on the burden of his illness, protecting him with the purest love. She truly is an angel; she saved us both.
